For years, Joann Boulos Callias has opened her home and her heart to fellow alumni, creating warm and welcoming spaces for connection, conversation and community. From intimate gatherings to lively celebrations, her generosity has strengthened the bonds that make our alumni network so special.

Joann’s Saint Mary’s story began in 1978, when she travelled from Antigua and Barbuda to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, following in the footsteps of her brother. She later returned to complete both her Bachelor of Education and Master of Education, proudly displaying all three degrees on the wall of her office.

Her passion for learning shaped a long and successful career in education. Joann began as a teacher, and in 2008 she founded the Saint Anthony Secondary School, where she continues to serve as principal today. Education runs in the family, too: her daughter, Ariel Boulos-Callias BSc’18, is also a proud Saint Mary’s graduate.

Joann’s connection to the university has remained strong for decades, going back to her days in residence when she met longtime staff member Keith Hotchkiss, then Director of Residence. They stayed in touch over the years, and through that relationship – and many others – Joann has played a meaningful role in both student recruitment from the island and alumni engagement.

Her commitment took on a new dimension when she realized how much she cherished reconnecting with classmates and meeting new graduates. Hoping to keep that spirit alive, she offered to host a small alumni gathering at her home. That one evening sparked a tradition. Over the years, Joann has welcomed dozens of alumni into her home, turning ordinary nights into extraordinary memories, complete with the culinary delights she lovingly prepares, often at her own expense.

Joann’s efforts remind us that alumni engagement isn’t just about events – it’s about relationships. Through her hospitality, she has helped countless alumni reconnect, share stories and form new friendships that enrich our global Santamarian community.

We are deeply grateful for her generosity, leadership and unwavering dedication. She shows how powerful it can be when alumni take the lead in fostering community and keeping the Saint Mary’s spirit thriving.

If you’ve ever considered hosting an alumni event, big or small, we’d love to support you. Whether it’s a casual coffee, a dinner party or a backyard get-together, your home can be the starting point for meaningful connections. Interested? Reach out to alumni@smu.ca and let’s make it happen together.

Thank you, Joann, for inspiring us all to keep the spirit of connection alive – and for being a true Santamarian.
