Saint Mary's wins Enactus National Social Entrepreneurship Competition
Congratulations to Enactus Saint Mary's students for being named the 2024 Enactus National Champions! The Enactus Canada National Exposition, held in Toronto from May 14 to 16, featured teams from 49 institutions across Canada.
Enactus Canada is a registered charity providing programs to inspire post-secondary students to initiate and operate socially and environmentally positive enterprises. This is the first time the Saint Mary’s team has taken the top prize. As a result, the team is thrilled to be representing Canada at The Enactus World Cup 2024 in Astana, Kazakstan, from October 2 to 4, 2024, with teams from 33 different countries.
This Fall, 26 deserving students from Saint Mary’s University will represent the university in Astana, Kazakhstan. They require assistance in growing their projects and covering travel expenses. Find out how you can help make their dream come true!
New home for Saint Mary’s Engineering to open in September 2024
Following a re-design over the spring and summer, SMU Engineering will move into its new home in the existing building on campus at 960 Tower Road. The new facilities will take up all three floors of the 28,000-square-foot building. This significant expansion of engineering space on campus will enhance teaching and learning capacity by providing state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and project rooms.
Saint Mary’s University appoints new Dean of the Sobey School of Business
Saint Mary’s University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michel Delorme to the position of Dean of the Sobey School of Business, effective July 1, 2024. Dr. Delorme brings more than 12 years of experience in leadership positions in business schools, nationally and internationally, and over 25 years of experience in higher education.
“Under Dr. Delorme’s leadership, the Sobey School of Business will build on its position as one of Canada’s most established and respected business schools and the business school of choice for students aspiring to lead with purpose,” said Saint Mary’s University President & Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray.
Saint Mary’s University appoints new Dean of Science
Saint Mary's University is delighted to announce that Dr. Sam Veres has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science, effective July 1, 2024.
“Dr. Veres brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this pivotal role, and he will continue to build upon the exciting ventures already underway in the Faculty of Science,” says Saint Mary's University President Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray. “His thoughtful leadership will ensure the continuing growth and success of the Faculty of Science, known for its research and teaching excellence.”
Saint Mary’s University a top destination for International Baccalaureate students
An enhanced International Baccalaureate (IB) admissions policy will allow Saint Mary’s to have one of the leading IB admissions and recognition policies, not only in Canada but in the world.
The university worked closely with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) North America University Relations Team on crafting a policy that offers admission to IBDP and IBCP graduates from the over 180 IB curriculum schools across Canada and more than 5,600 schools in 159 countries worldwide. The new policy further enhances Saint Mary’s strong recognition and support of IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) and individual diploma course-taking students.
Distinguished Delegation Award for Model UN group
Saint Mary’s delegation of 10 students represented The Bahamas in the annual National Model UN Conference in New York City, coming home with a Distinguished Delegation Award, the equivalent of a silver medal. The team from Dr. Marc Doucet’s Model UN course included students in the Faculty of Arts and the Sobey School of Business.
“Few other delegations were as well prepared as our team was, and that was all thanks to Dr. Doucet,” says student Wesley Brouse. “Although no one on our team had ever done Model UN before, he ensured we were all experts at it by the time we got to New York. We could not have won the award without him.”
Student launches Black haircare and beauty supply business on campus
Queen-Esther Okundonor, a fourth-year Marketing and Finance student from Nigeria, launched her new business, QTress Beauty Supplies on campus in October. QTress is a vending machine located in the Loyola Academic Building on campus providing convenient and easy access to hair and beauty care products for the diverse student body at Saint Mary’s University and Halifax at large.
PWHL's Victoria Bach inspires young hockey players during campus visit
The Scott McCain & Leslie McLean Centre for Sport, Business and Health had the pleasure of hosting Victoria Bach from the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) at the Dauphinee Centre on campus on April 14, 2024. Bach visited Halifax as part of a series of events organized by the Genevieve Francis Memorial Fund, initiated by SMU’s former Indigenous Visiting Fellow Ryan Francis.
The event was aimed at young girls who play hockey in Nova Scotia and drew approximately 50 spectators. Centre Director Dr. Cheryl MacDonald facilitated a question and answer session, followed by Bach raffling off a game-used stick and signing autographs and spending time with members of the Huskies women’s hockey team.
Thousands gather on SMU Huskies field for solar eclipse event
Science enthusiasts of all ages filled the SMU Huskies football field on April 8, 2024 for a chance to view the partial eclipse through one of the university’s solar telescopes or with a free pair of SMU Science eclipse glasses. Others brought homemade pinhole projectors and observed the changes in shadows as a way to view the eclipse safely.
