Creating Pathways: New Bursary Supports Indigenous Students

By Delia Macpherson

Members from Eastward Energy visited Saint Mary’s campus to discuss the new Indigenous Opportunities Bursary with student advisor Kylar Johnson

A new partnership between Saint Mary’s University and Eastward Energy is opening doors for Indigenous students through meaningful financial support and a shared commitment to reconciliation.

Launching in Fall 2025, the Eastward Energy Indigenous Opportunities Bursary will provide $1,000 to five self-identifying Indigenous students annually for the next five years. The goal: to reduce financial barriers and empower students to thrive in their academic journeys and communities.

"As an Indigenous Student Advisor, my role is to be a bridge—connecting students to the resources they need to succeed,” said Kylar Johnson BComm'23, Indigenous Student Advisor. "This bursary not only helps Indigenous students financially but also affirms the commitment of the university to provide them with the support they need to thrive. It is a tangible, real-world example of creating change. By creating these opportunities, we are reinforcing the importance of community and reconciliation, ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard and valued throughout the university experience."

For Kristen Wilcott MAEC'21, Manager of Government Relations at Eastwood Energy, the initiative reflects the company’s broader efforts to build inclusive partnerships. “Supporting Indigenous students is an important step toward building a more inclusive future,” she said. “This bursary underscores our dedication to fostering opportunities and partnerships with First Nations communities. I hope it encourages students to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in their communities.”

Alumni Connections and Shared Commitments

This collaboration is rooted in a deep alignment of values. Both Saint Mary’s and Eastward Energy are committed to reconciliation and fostering educational opportunities for underrepresented communities.

The connection is also personal—several key Eastward Energy team members are SMU alumni, including Ashley MacDonald BComm’11, Vice President of Finance and Allison Coffin MBA’13, Director of Regulatory and Government Relations. For them, the partnership represents a meaningful way to give back to their alma mater and support the next generation of leaders.

“This initiative reflects our continued commitment to Indigenous youth,” says John Hawkins, President of Eastward Energy. “As many of our team members at Eastward are Saint Mary’s alumni, we are pleased to partner with them. By supporting the next generation of leaders, we hope to contribute to reconciliation and the shared prosperity of our region.”

A Vision for a More Inclusive Future

For Saint Mary’s, this new bursary aligns with the university’s strategic priorities—advancing inclusion, reconciliation and access to education.

“This significant gift will have a lasting impact, empowering Indigenous students to reach their academic potential,” said Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray, President and Vice-Chancellor at Saint Mary’s University. “Saint Mary’s University remains dedicated to eliminating disparities and promoting inclusion, core pillars of our strategic plan. This bursary is a key step in realizing those values as we strive for a world without limits.”
