A World Without Limits
Letter from the President and Vice-Chancellor of Saint Mary's University, Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray
Saint Mary’s University is committed every day to creating the space for possibility for our students, our researchers and for our community. And together with you, our more than 53,000 alumni around the world, we are building a World without limits; a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient world. Our collective efforts make us a powerful force for positive change in the world. I hope you are inspired by the incredible stories of alumni impact and service to community in this issue of Maroon + White. You will also see announcements related to new scholarships and programs generously supported by alumni that will help bring talented students to Saint Mary’s. This means more new faces and more new ideas coming out of Saint Mary’s. That is how we build a more robust economy and a more inclusive society. Please help us spread the word of how special Saint Mary’s is and how much we have to offer our students—alumni are our best recruiters and we appreciate your support. All of this momentum and pride creates positive energy here on campus and across our Saint Mary’s community. Throughout this past academic year, we welcomed our students back to campus. Hearing the buzz in the halls, watching people study and socialize together, cheering on our student-athletes representing the university and seeing the hard work of our faculty and staff reminded me of why being here is so valuable. It is a special and important time on campus because we will soon host in-person convocations in the McNally Theatre Auditorium where our graduates will have the experience of crossing the stage to the cheers of family and friends. I cannot wait to celebrate our winter and spring graduating students in May. This energy will keep building as we move through the summer and into the fall when we welcome new and returning students in September and invite our alumni to Homecoming Weekend (October 14–16). We hope to see you on campus in the year ahead—you are welcome ‘home’ anytime.

Letter from the Alumni Association President
Welcome to the Spring Edition of the digital Maroon + White alumni magazine. This is my first issue as your Alumni Association President. I am proud to be serving more than 53,000 alumni all over the world. There is lots of news to share with you, from a new building on campus to global Alumni news and stories. We have so many alumni doing incredible things that it’s difficult to narrow down what to share with you. In this issue, you’ll read a story of a father who gave his daughter the gift of life and wants others to know the signs of debilitating kidney disease; a Psychology grad who’s gone to the dogs; and, an alumni couple who work together as entrepreneurs to bring authentic and “truly tasty” noodles to Halifax. It was Volunteer Appreciation Week in late April and I can confidently say we have some of the most generous and dedicated volunteers at SMU. Alumni come forward from all over the world to volunteer on the Alumni Council, as mentors, panelists and speakers. There is no hesitation when we reach out. On behalf of all of us, thank you very much! Don’t hesitate to tell us your stories, too! Follow us on social media and stay connected in whatever way works for you. If you would like to volunteer to be on Alumni Council, please send an email of interest with your resume to alumni@smu.ca. We are recruiting for new members at our Annual General Meeting in September. We are looking forward to getting back out there and meeting with our alumni family in person as safety permits. We invite you to come back and join us for Homecoming Weekend Oct 14-16, 2022. With gratitude and a heartfelt thank you, Collette Robert BSc’15 MSc’19 President, Saint Mary’s Alumni Association
